Illuminance at work
The illuminance needed at work depends on
- The amount of detail that needs to be seen
- The age of employees
- How quickly and accurately the task needs to be completed
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) recommends different illuminances according to the type of work. These recommendations include the average illuminance for the work area and the minimum measured illuminance.
Activity |
Typical locations |
Average illuminance (Lux) 1x |
Minimum measured illuminance (Lux) 1x |
Rough work that does not require any perception of detail. Movement of people, vehicles and machines in hazardous work environments. |
Construction sites. Excavations and soil work |

Tasks requiring limited perception of detail |
Factories assembling large components |

50 |
Construction site lighting should have at least an average lighting level of 50 Lux (luminance) which is equivalent to an internal domestic ceiling light. Although lighting should be judged based on the task in hand, for jobs requiring a higher perceived level of detail, the level of lighting should be significantly greater.
The HSE warns that using just the average illuminance may lead to lower illuminance levels in certain areas.

Halogen and LED Technology
Most of our work lights have LED technology, but you will find halogen lights as well.
Halogen bulbs are similar in structure to incandescent bulbs. Halogen lights are warm and bright but consume less energy than incandescent lamps. However, LED lights are more energy-efficient.
Lifespan
LED lights last longer than halogen lamps, which makes LED technology a good investment. LED bulbs can last between 15,000 to 50,000 hours. Some can even have a longer lifespan. On the other hand, halogen lights last between 2,000 to 4,000 hours.
In addition, LED lighting does not produce heat or UV emissions. LED lights are also superior to halogen lights in terms of
- Energy Efficiency
- Brightness
- Dimming Capabilities
- Reliability
- Environmental Performance
